For over a week I have been using FreeBSD as my main desktop system. During this time, I have not logged into my W2K desktop. I have been able to do pretty much everything I need to do (email, spreadsheets, wordprocessing, internet access, music, media files, dtp, etc..).
Since my last posting to this site, I decided to try out some 3D games. Unfortunatley, this turned out to be quite a lot of effort to accomplish (though I finally got it setup

It has been a few days since I originally wrote about FreeBSD. Since that time, I ended up buying a new hard drive and started a conversion of my Linux server over to FreeBSD.

Fry’s Electronics is advertising a Western Digital 200GB 8MB Cache Hard Drive for $119 (after rebate). This works out to 60 cents per GB.
In anycase, didn’t take me too long to go out and pick one of these drives up. So far the drive has been running great (oh did I mention that the drive comes in a retail package w/a controller card capable of controlling 4 drives?

Over the past several days, I have spent time working with FreeBSD 5.1. For those of you who do not know, FreeBSD is an advanced operating system derived from BSD, the version of UNIX(R) developed at the University of California, Berkeley.
FreeBSD when compared to other operating systems is perhaps most similar to Linux. Both run a large amount of the same software, they are both *nix and for the most part are primarily server operating systems (though being used more and more everyday as a desktop OS).
