In August 2000, Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Product Group member David Brookers created a whitepaper discussing the transition of Hotmail from its UNIX roots to Windows 2000. It is definitely an interesting read.. click below to read the article (as reposted from The Register) — the full whitepaper apparently is at Security Office — unfortunately I was unable to access this page. Enjoy.

Two cool new bugs in Internet Explorer (its nice having a “one browser” world..) —>

First off, there is a backdoor of sorts in Internet Explorer/Outlook/Outlook Express that allows malicious web sites and possibly email messages to take over your system and do whatever to it .. so run your Windows Update to address this very publicized problem.

Second, according to this article on The Register, the patch is not 100% effective. According to Microsoft, it is possible to make the system vulnerable again.

The problem lies in the Active-X control system.. When a website is downloaded, if it requires an Active-X control, it will automatically download the control if it is digitally signed by a trusted source (in most systems this includes Microsoft Corp) — however, this system has been exploited and now active-x controls that appear to be trusted could infact not be from Microsoft and as a result could cause serious harm to your system.

In anycase, the fix is to remove Microsoft (or for that matter, everyone) from your Trusted Publisher list..

To do this, go into Internet Explorer, click on Tools -> Internet Options -> Content -> Publishers. Remove all items on that list (click on the item, click remove)

According to Times Online UK IBM is working on ASCI Purple and Blue Gene/L .. the fastest and most powerful machines built … The combined capacity equals 500 of todays fastest computers..

ASCI Purple, used for nuclear simulations, can compute 100 thousand billion calculations per second (100 teraflops) — Blue Gene/L will be used by the US Department of Energy and has a maximum speed of 360 teraflops.

What does this all mean? umm.. pretty much nothing .. just that we are building faster computers .. surprise surprise. :)
