The first update to the 3.0 series has been released .. mostly bug fixes and internationalization issues .. Slashdot has information — also, in the replies, it discusses how to speed up the system dramatically (ie apps pop up before your done clicking hehe…) I’ll have to try those out — waiting a few milliseconds for apps to launch is making me fume..

Good ol’ Microsoft .. according to the Washingpost.com article, “Open-Source Fight Flares At Pentagon” — Microsoft is lobbying the Pentagon to stop using open source software (Linux, KDE, Gnome, Apache, PHP, MySQL, and the like ..) and switch to proprietary systems (you know, Microsoft software..)
Microsoft claimed the following: Open source threatens security and its (microsofts?) intellectual property.
However, the DoD concluded that open source results in a more secure, less expensive applications and that its use inside government facilities should be expanded. While thats damaging enough, the report continued:
“Banning open source would have immediate, broad, and strongly negative impacts on the ability of many sensitive and security-focused DOD groups to protect themselves against cyberattacks,”
The article is rather interesting — atleast more and more people are understanding how open source is definitely in the best interest of many individuals .. Microsoft can continue to whine and complain, but lately it seems like every week brings a new worm/virus/infection that compromises yet another Microsoft product that simply was not secure…. (oh you want to know this weeks? It has to do with Microsoft’s SQL server — just what companies need — viruses that destroy data.. great..)

For those of you that do not know, Apple has been busily working on their OS X system — a UNIX based operating system that combines a robust UNIX kernel with the ease of use of an Apple GUI. The first incarnation of this system was dog slow.. the second was much better, but still quite a bit slower than other comparable systems (OS9, Windows, KDE, etc..) — however the latest release, coming soon, will provide insanely cool technologies such as Quartz Extreme — basically transforming the 3D accelerator portion of the graphics card into an insanely powerful 2D accelerator.. this provides for many techniques (transparencies, zooming, etc..) to be made available on the desktop. In addition, due to the fact 3D graphic cards have a tremendous amount of fast memory (64MB — 128MB), the overal interface will be much faster and more responsive.
Definitely very cool — Dare I say it, but Apple’s OSX is shaping up to be what could be considered the ultimate desktop OS — the power of UNIX, the ease of use of Apple and the speed of the latest crop of graphics cards.. w00p.

Remember when I mentioned all of those Microsoft software bugs/security issues/yada yada yada .. well Microsoft released a security fix, but unfortunately didn’t actually FIX all of the problems they claimed they fixed. All of this under their “Trustworthy Computing” initiative.
